VIVIANA’S HOPE

I’m Viviana Grace, diagnosed with Stage IV Hepatoblastoma at 17 months old. With over 85% of my liver covered in tumors and some in my lungs, the journey’s been tough. Texas Children’s Hospital and my loving family have been my pillars of support. Through a 24-week chemotherapy plan and a place on the liver transplant list, I’m fighting this rare cancer. Yet, the financial burden is substantial, even with insurance. Viviana’s Hope was born to help families like mine bridge that gap, offering financial assistance to those facing childhood cancer’s overwhelming costs. At 17 months old, on June 5, 2020, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Hepatoblastoma. Hepatoblastoma is a rare childhood cancer, and only 1 in every 1,000,000 children are diagnosed with it in the United States each year. Over 85% of my liver was covered with tumors, and some of these tumors had spread to my lungs. Luckily, I live in the great State of Texas and have access to the premier children’s hospital in the South, Texas Children’s Hospital. I am blessed to have a team of oncologists, pediatricians, pharmacists, dieticians, and nurses taking amazing care of me. I have been put on a 24-week chemotherapy plan and I am on the liver transplant list. The road has been tough, I do not always feel well and sometimes I get scared, but I know that I am loved by my family, friends, and all my medical team. Their love and care have helped me be strong! I know that I will beat this rare childhood cancer, and I want to be able to spread the hope and love that I have experienced throughout my journey. I know that my Papa and Mama have worked hard to be able to maintain the health insurance our family carries to be able afford the care I receive, but insurance does not cover everything. For my liver transplant alone, my parents will have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. I know that I am not alone. There are many children at Texas Children’s Hospital dealing with childhood cancer, and my family and I know firsthand that the costs to treat these cancers is significant. Even when a family has excellent health insurance, they will be responsible for paying thousands of dollars for out-of-pocket expenses. With all these expenses in mind, Viviana’s Hope was created. We want to raise funding and spread blessings in the form of financial assistance to help families dealing with childhood cancer treatment bridge the financial gap that is left after insurance is tapped out.
